Ordinance redefines ‍‍`Freedom Fighter‍‍`

The interim government of Bangladesh has issued a new ordinance redefining the term "Bir Muktijoddha" (freedom fighter) under the National Freedom Fighters Council Act.

The updated definition now distinguishes between direct participants in the 1971 Liberation War and those who supported the war in various capacities.

Under the new definition, individuals who actively fought during the war—either through armed resistance within Bangladesh or after receiving training in Indian camps—are recognized as "Bir Muktijoddhas." This category includes members of the armed forces, police, East Pakistan Rifles (EPR), Mukti Bahini, naval commandos, Kilo Force, Ansar, and those officially associated with the Mujibnagar Government.

Additionally, women who were victims of wartime atrocities (Birangonas), and doctors, nurses, and medical assistants who treated wounded fighters in field hospitals, are also recognized as freedom fighters.

A separate category, "War Associates," includes individuals who contributed to the independence movement through organizing, diplomacy, awareness-building, or advocacy—both within the country and abroad. This group includes professional expatriates, foreign-based diplomats, artists of the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, journalists, and members of the Swadhin Bangla football team.

Officials from the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs confirmed that while the classification has changed, those now categorized as "War Associates" will retain their previous benefits. The ordinance aims to bring clarity and structure to the national recognition of contributions during the Liberation War.
