Mobile internet across Bangladesh is expected to be restored around 3:00pm on Sunday after nearly 10 days of disruption, according to State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak.
He made this announcement during a briefing following a meeting with mobile operators at BTRC Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday.
Palak also shared that users will receive 5GB of free internet for three days once the connection is reinstated.
The government initially suspended mobile internet on July 17 due to concerns over the current crisis and to curb the spread of misinformation on social media.
The following day, the DDM building was set on fire, which reportedly led to a 30-40 percent reduction in bandwidth, causing partial and, later, total internet outages across the country, as per media reports.
Broadband internet was partially restored in selected areas on July 23, and nationwide connections were tested the next day.
The unrest began in early July when students and job seekers protested the reintroduction of the quota system in government jobs.
The High Court`s June 5 ruling reinstated the quota system, declaring a 2018 government circular abolishing it as illegal. The Supreme Court later issued a status quo on this verdict on July 10.
Protests intensified after violent clashes on July 15 at Dhaka University, involving both demonstrators and law enforcement, leading to further escalation and confrontations.
