A shocking robbery took place today at Rupali Bank in the Chunkutia area of South Keraniganj, Dhaka, leaving the area in shock.

As soon as the police were alerted, locals quickly gathered to help authorities surround the bank.

The police are now trying to get the robbers inside the bank to surrender.

The incident occurred around 2 PM on Thursday, December 19.

Dhaka District Police Superintendent (SP) Ahmed Muid confirmed the robbery to The Daily Star.

He explained that when the robbers entered the Rupali Bank in Chunkutia, local residents quickly reacted by blocking the bank’s exit and locking the doors from the outside.

"Once we received the information, police and other law enforcement teams rushed to the scene," Muid said.

"We have learned that the robbers are armed with firearms, and we are working to get them to surrender."

Bank employees, local police, and residents all described how the robbers entered the bank around 2 PM. A few hundred people quickly gathered outside the bank after an announcement about the robbery was made over a loudspeaker at a nearby mosque.

The locals then surrounded the building, making it difficult for the robbers to escape.

The situation is still developing as authorities continue their efforts to resolve the standoff peacefully.
