National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has said Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus is contemplating stepping down from his role, according to a report by BBC Bangla.
Nahid met with Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday evening, amid growing speculation about the interim government head’s future.
The meeting, which began shortly after 7pm, lasted just over 30 minutes and focused on the worsening political situation, NCP Joint Member Secretary Mushfiq Us Salehin told bdnews24.com.
Later that night, BBC Bangla quoted Nahid as saying Yunus had expressed serious doubts about his ability to continue in office.
“Sir said ‘if I can’t work… I was brought here after a mass uprising to bring change and reform to the country. But in the current situation—with mounting pressure from movements and the way I’m being cornered—this isn’t how I can work. The political parties—you’ve all failed to reach common ground’,” Nahid told the BBC.
He added that he had urged Yunus not to resign.
Shortly after Nahid’s departure, two student advisors—Mahfuj Alam and Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain—also met with Yunus.
A member of the chief advisor’s press wing downplayed the meetings, calling them “routine discussions as part of official work”.
The developments come amid intensifying tensions within the interim cabinet.
Disputes have erupted following the swearing-in of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as Dhaka South mayor, a move that has led the BNP to demand the resignation of Mahfuj and Asif Mahmud.
National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman has also come under fire.
In response, the NCP has called for the removal of three other advisors—Asif Nazrul, Salehuddin Ahmed, and Wahiduddin Mahmud—accusing them of favouring the BNP.
Nahid’s meeting with Yunus took place against the backdrop of these escalating intra-governmental disputes and mounting political uncertainty.
