The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Md. Nasir Uddin has confirmed that the Election Commission is aiming to hold the national elections in December.
The preparations for this major event are already in full swing.
Speaking at an event in the capital on Monday, February 24, marking the inauguration of the newly elected committee of the Reporters Forum for Election Democracy (RFED) and a farewell ceremony for the outgoing committee, Nasir Uddin shared details on the commission`s plans.
"We have set our target for the national elections in December. To make this happen, we will need to announce the election schedule at least two months in advance," said CEC Nasir Uddin.
In his speech, the CEC also addressed suggestions made by the Reform Commission regarding the possibility of holding elections in June.
"This could happen if we remove 16 million deceased voters and exclude 35 million new voters from the list," he explained. The voter list update process is expected to be completed by June.
Nasir Uddin also made it clear that the statements from the Local Government Reform Commission were their own perspectives.
"They are wise and knowledgeable individuals, and I have no comment on that," he stated. "There is a political debate happening around this issue, but the Election Commission does not want to get involved. First, we need to finalize the voter list."
