The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has confirmed that the Election Commission is moving forward with preparations for the upcoming national elections, expected to take place in December this year.
The CEC emphasized that the election schedule will likely be announced in October, in alignment with their current timeline.
The announcement came following a meeting between the CEC and the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cook, held at the Election Commission office in Agargaon on Monday.
The meeting primarily focused on the Commission’s preparations and the potential support from the British government.
“We are progressing with December as our target. Our current timeline points to December, and we are working accordingly. If the elections are to be held in December, we will need to release the schedule by October. We are making sure our preparations are in place so that the timeline is not missed,” the CEC said.
During the meeting, the British High Commissioner expressed interest in the Commission’s election readiness.
“They were keen to know about our progress, and we shared our plans with them. They have offered their assistance as well,” added Nasir Uddin.
The CEC also noted that they have sought help from the British government in training election observers and candidates` agents.
"We have requested assistance in providing training for agents and observers, and they have shown interest in supporting us. They asked what kind of help we would require, and we will discuss it further,” he explained.
He further added that the British High Commissioner expressed their willingness to support Bangladesh’s democratic transition.
"They are interested in the entire election process, including foreign election observers. We have shared all necessary information with them regarding voter registration, political party registration, and other electoral matters. We will ensure foreign observers are appointed in due time,” the CEC assured.
The discussion highlighted the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and organized election process as the country heads toward its crucial national elections.
