Interim Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed hope for the successful formulation of a landmark ‘July Charter,’ urging political parties not to squander the current opportunity for national consensus.
Speaking at the second round of dialogue with political parties under the National Consensus Commission on Monday, Yunus emphasized, “Let us not lose this opportunity.”
The dialogue, held at the Bangladesh Foreign Service Academy, invited 30 political parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the Jatiya Nagorik Party.
Yunus, also the head of the commission, recounted the formation of the Reform Commission and later the National Consensus Commission, acknowledging initial doubts about political parties’ willingness to engage deeply.
However, he said he was pleasantly surprised by the serious participation and spirited debate during the first phase of discussions.
“There are several issues where we are close to consensus,” Yunus said, expressing optimism that remaining gaps could be bridged during this second phase, potentially adding more agreed items to the forthcoming July Charter. He called it a “beautiful prospect for a national document.”
The chief advisor expressed his joy at working directly with party leaders on shaping the future of the country.
According to commission sources, thematic discussions will continue before and after Eid-ul-Azha, focusing particularly on unresolved constitutional reform proposals.
The ultimate goal is to draft a unified July Charter in collaboration with all political stakeholders.
