BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was picked up by police from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka around 9:25 a.m. today.
Md Shahidullah, deputy commissioner (crime) of DMP`s Gulshan division, confirmed the detention.
According to police sources, Fakhrul was taken to DB police on Minto Road.
Rahat Ara Begum, wife of Fakhrul, told the present reporters, "Police came and seized all the CCTV camera devices from our building. They said they had orders to arrest my husband. I hope they return him soon."
"First, some DB police came to our apartment to talk. After they left, a few stayed in front of the building. About 10 minutes later, they returned and took my husband."
"He (Fakhrul) is very ill," the wife said.
The incident happened the day after conflict broke out between BNP activists and police in Kakrail, which resulted in the deaths of a ward-level BNP leader and a police constable.
In response to the police intervention that led the BNP to call off its Nayapaltan grand rally yesterday, the BNP is holding a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal today.
