Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Mohammad Sanauallah has proposed the implementation of proxy voting for expatriates in the upcoming national elections.
This recommendation aims to address the challenges faced by expatriates in casting their votes.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, March 11, at the Election Commission office, Sanauallah explained the issue with the current postal ballot system.
He stated, "The current voting system for expatriates, which is the postal ballot system, is no longer functional. Not a single vote has been cast from abroad through this system."
According to Sanauallah, a new system is required to meet the expectations of expatriates.
He emphasized, "To fulfill the wishes and expectations of expatriates in the next elections, we must adopt the proxy voting system. This method is already used in many countries, and it is the only way to allow expatriates to cast their votes in real-time."
The Election Commissioner also mentioned the next steps for introducing this system.
"We will organize a workshop on proxy voting and consult with various parties. Afterward, we will engage in discussions with political parties and other stakeholders. By April 15, we will be able to specify the time required to develop this system," he said. "If there is unanimous agreement, changes to the existing law will be necessary."
Sanauallah further clarified the benefits of the proxy voting system, noting that it would give expatriates the power to select someone to cast their vote on their behalf.
"With this system, an expatriate will have the option to choose someone to vote for them," he added.
This proposal for proxy voting aims to resolve the ongoing challenges of expatriate participation in the electoral process and ensure that their voices are heard in the upcoming elections.
