EVM use in maximum 150 seats during JS polls

The Election Commission (EC) has initially decided to use electronic voting machine (EVM) in maximum 150 constituencies in the next Jatiya Sangsad (JS) elections, reports BSS.

EC's additional secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said this to journalists after the end of a meeting of the commission at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city's Agargaon area on Tuesday.

Explaining the commission's decision, he said EVM would be used in not more than 150 constituencies and it can be used in minimum in a single constituency.

Ashok said the commission didn't discuss in detail over the matter in today's meeting as it only talked internally and final decision would be taken after proper examination and scrutiny.

Now EC has 1.5 lakh EVMs and those can be used in 70 to 75 constituencies, he said, adding that the EC will have to procure EVMs to use those in more constituencies.

Initiative would be taken from now and if required, new project would be taken to procure EVM, he mentioned.
