Fire in New Supermarket under control

The fire on the third floor of the New Super Market in the New Market area of the capital has been brought under control. Fire service and 32 units of civil defense brought the fire under control at around 9:00 am.

Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defense Directorate Brig General, Md. Main Uddin gave this information to the media at around 10:30 on Saturday (15 April).

He said, "Now the work of fire extinguishing and dumping is going on. Even though the fire was brought under control at 9:10 am, we did not make an announcement earlier for the sake of safety.”

30 units of fire service and civil defense joined. A joint force of army, navy and air force helped in the rescue operation. Besides, 12 platoon members of BGB was deployed along with RAB and police.3836Eight fire service members and three shop workers were injured. They fell ill due to heavy smoke coming out of fire. They were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), said the officer-in-charge of the fire service headquarters, MD. Shah Jahan Shikder.

After getting the news of the fire, traders rushed to the spot. They are seen crying in front of the market. Some of the traders are risking their lives to get the intact goods out of their shops.

Shopkeepers say that due to COVID, there was no business in the last few years, but this year, they got the opportunity to make up for the loss during Eid. Business was also going well. But, everything ended in a fire.

New market fire 5 (1)Officer-in-Charge (OC-Media) of the Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defense, Shahjahan Shikder told the media, "The fire broke out at New Super Market at 5:40 am and the fire service unit reached the spot within 5:43 am and started controlling the fire. However, no casualties have been reported so far.”
