Former CEC Nurul Huda placed on 4-day remand

A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in a case filed over allegations of conducting fraudulent national elections.

On Monday, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman passed the remand order after Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police sought a 10-day remand for interrogation.

The hearing was conducted with Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki representing the state, while the defense appealed for bail and cancellation of the remand petition. After hearing both sides, the court granted a four-day remand.

Nurul Huda was arrested on Sunday evening from the Uttara area of the capital. Locals reportedly detained him and handed him over to the police.

A widely circulated video on social media shows Nurul Huda, dressed in a lungi, being surrounded by an agitated crowd and wearing a garland of shoes.

Earlier on the same day, BNP filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against the Election Commissions that conducted the 10th, 11th, and 12th national elections.

The case named former Chief Election Commissioners Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, KM Nurul Huda, Kazi Habibul Awal, and 24 others as accused.

The complaint was lodged by Salah Uddin Ahmed, a member of BNP’s National Executive Committee, alleging manipulation and irregularities in the electoral process under their leadership.
