In a major development, eight people, including the former police chief, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, were officially arrested on charges of crimes against humanity related to the July-August genocide.
The arrest follows accusations of their involvement in the horrific events, and they were presented before the International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday, November 20.
The eight officials, who are now facing the tribunal, include former police chief Al-Mamun and former Major General (Retd.) Ziaul Ahsan, who previously led the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMCS).
The others are former high-ranking police officers from Dhaka, including Mohammad Abdullah Al Kafi, the former police superintendent of Dhaka District, and Mohammad Jasim Uddin Molla, a former deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The individuals were brought to the tribunal at 10:15 AM, where a three-member panel, headed by Justice Mohammad Golam Mortuza Mojumdar, will oversee their cases.
The other officials facing charges are Mohammad Shahidur Islam, former Additional Superintendent of Police (Savar Circle), Abul Hasan, former officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, Mazharul Haque, former officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station, and Mohammad Arafat Hossain, former inspector of the Dhaka North Detective Branch.
Earlier, on October 27, the tribunal granted approval for the prosecution’s request to bring these eight officials to court. Arrest warrants were issued for a total of 17 former police officers in connection with the genocide, and those already in custody will be brought before the tribunal for hearings.
This legal action marks an important step in the ongoing efforts to hold accountable those involved in the crimes against humanity during the tragic events of July and August.
