Garment workers end 7-hour protest, Capital’s traffic chaos eases

In a protest that brought parts of Dhaka to a standstill for nearly seven hours, garment workers in Banani took to the streets on Monday, March 10, after a colleague tragically died in a road accident involving a truck.

The workers blocked a major road to demand justice and express their anger over the incident, causing massive traffic disruptions.

The protest began early in the morning and continued until around 1:30 PM, when the workers finally lifted the blockade, allowing traffic to slowly return to normal.

The road closure led to severe congestion in key areas such as Gulshan, Farmgate, Tejgaon, Shahbagh, Karwan Bazar, Mohakhali, Badda, Rampura, and Hatirjheel.

As traffic piled up in those areas, it affected commuters across the capital, making travel difficult for most of the morning and early afternoon.

According to the Gulshan Traffic Division, police had to implement diversions at the Banani-Kakoli and Mohakhali Amtoli crossings.

Vehicles were rerouted through alternative roads, including Gulshan-2 and Gulshan-1 via Amtoli, to manage the situation and allow the movement of both inbound and outbound traffic.

The workers ended their protest after discussions with authorities, and normal traffic flow was gradually restored on the affected roads.

However, the traffic congestion caused by the protest took hours to clear, impacting thousands of commuters across the city.

The protest, which stemmed from a tragic road accident, has once again highlighted the ongoing challenges garment workers face when it comes to safety and justice.
