Home Advisor Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury says that those involved with the attack on students and members of the public in Gazipur will receive the utmost punishment, reports bdnews24.com.
“We are taking action according to the law,” he said. “Those involved will receive the utmost punishment. We will arrange it so they get the maximum punishment.”
He made the remarks to the media after visiting the injured at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around noon on Saturday.
It has been alleged that locals attacked students in front of the house of former minister and Gazipur Awami League President AKM Mozammel Haque in the Dhirasram Dakhinkhan area of the city at 9pm on Friday after allegations of a crowd attacking and vandalising the residence. At least 15 students were injured in the incident.
Those injured in the attack were initially admitted to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur. Then, around 1am, seven victims with serious injuries were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Witnesses say that a group chanting Anti-discrimination Student Movement slogans broke the lock on the door of the residence and began vandalising it. Hearing of the incident, locals then surrounded the group. After an argument between the two sides, locals attacked them.
DMCH Director Brig Gen Md Asaduzzaman said that most of the injured had injuries on their heads, with some having fractures as well. One had broken his arms and legs.
They have been admitted to the hospital and are receiving medical treatment, he said.
