The interim government has ordered an urgent investigation into the death of Jubo Dal leader Md. Touhidul Islam, who passed away while in the custody of the joint forces in Comilla.

The Chief Advisor‍‍`s Press Wing issued a statement on Saturday, confirming the decision. The statement explained that on Friday night, the police had taken Touhidur Islam, a young leader, to the hospital.

There were allegations that he had been injured after being arrested from his home early in the morning by security forces.

In response, the interim government has called for an immediate inquiry into the incident.

The government emphasized that ensuring human rights protection in every aspect of national life is a top priority.

The statement also mentioned that many of the country‍‍`s leading human rights activists are involved in the government’s efforts.

The government also mentioned that several commissions had been formed to reform the criminal justice system, with most already submitting their reports.

“To prevent any potential human rights violations during police interrogations, crime management, or the judicial process, the interim government will have constructive discussions with political parties about these reports,” the statement said.

The government reiterated its commitment to pushing forward with these reforms.

In a separate statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that the commander of the local military camp had been removed immediately.

The ISPR statement revealed,

“On January 31 at 3 a.m., based on specific allegations, joint forces detained Md. Touhidul Islam (40) from Adarsha Sadar Upazila in Comilla. He died at 12:30 p.m. the next day at Comilla Medical College Hospital.”

The ISPR added,

“We have already taken necessary steps to investigate this tragic event. The commander of the military camp has been immediately relieved of their duties.”

In addition, a high-ranking investigation committee has been set up to determine the exact cause of death.

“Anyone found responsible will face appropriate legal action according to military law,” the ISPR concluded.
