The government has decided to provide jute-made school bags and uniforms to primary students across the country under a new initiative aimed at supporting local industry and reducing environmental impact.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat, involving officials from key ministries.
According to Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman, the programme will begin as a pilot, covering two primary schools in each upazila.
Officials said local administrations will select the institutions, with the first phase expected to start in July.
Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin said around 100,000 students will receive free bags and uniforms in the initial stage.
He added that the programme will gradually be expanded to include all primary school students nationwide.
The initiative is part of efforts to promote locally made products and ensure wider access to essential school items, while also encouraging environmental sustainability.
