Bangladesh is currently experiencing an intense heatwave affecting 33 districts across the country as of Monday.
The heatwave, which began on Saturday, is expected to continue through Tuesday, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). However, a gradual decrease in temperature may begin from Wednesday.
Weather officials report that more than half of the country is under the grip of this heatwave, while other regions are also enduring sweltering and humid conditions.
Although some areas are witnessing rainfall, it has done little to alleviate the heat due to high humidity levels in the air.
Kazi Zebunnesa, a meteorologist at the BMD, told the press on Monday afternoon that the heatwave is currently affecting all districts within the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions.
In addition, heatwave conditions are present in Faridpur, Madaripur, and Patuakhali under the Barisal division.
Altogether, the heatwave is sweeping across 33 districts nationwide. Zebunnesa noted that the heat is likely to persist on Tuesday but could start easing from Wednesday as rainfall is expected to increase, with a low-pressure system possibly developing.
On Monday, the highest temperature in the country was recorded in Syedpur at 37.4°C. On Sunday, the highest temperatures were recorded in Jessore, Chuadanga, and Koyra in Khulna, each reaching 37°C.
Despite intermittent rainfall in some areas, the oppressive heat remains. Meteorologist Md Bazlur Rashid explained that the persistent discomfort is due to the high moisture content in the air.
The humid conditions stem from the remnants of water vapor brought in by a previous low-pressure system over the sea last month.
Rashid emphasized that without continuous rainfall, the heatwave is likely to continue, though the situation may improve after a few days with increased rainfall.
Public health officials are advising residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight, and take necessary precautions during this period of extreme heat.
