The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast heavy rainfall across much of the country, including Dhaka and Chattogram, due to the influence of the monsoon.
Many areas, including Dhaka, are already experiencing rainfall, which is expected to continue for the next four to five days. The agency has also warned of possible landslides in hilly regions.
According to the BMD, a low-pressure area has formed over the west-central and northwestern Bay of Bengal. The monsoon trough stretches from Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha across the low-pressure center and Bangladesh’s southern region to Assam. The monsoon is currently moderately active over Bangladesh and in a moderate state over the north Bay.
The 24-hour forecast from 9:00 am Sunday states that many places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and some areas in Rajshahi and Khulna divisions may experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Moderate to heavy rainfall may also occur in some parts of the country. Day and night temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged.
Meteorologist A.K.M. Nazmul Haque told Bangla Tribune that the rain could continue for four to five days intermittently across the country, increasing the risk of waterlogging in Dhaka and Chattogram and of landslides in the hill tracts of Chattogram.
A special weather warning says that under the influence of an active southwest monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions over the next 72 hours from 9:00 am Sunday.
Due to very heavy rainfall, landslides are possible in the hilly areas of Chattogram division, while temporary waterlogging may occur in parts of Dhaka and Chattogram city.
