Holy Ashura Today

Today marks the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, a deeply significant and mournful day for Muslims around the world.

The day, which falls on the tenth day of the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar, carries immense spiritual and historical importance.

Devout Muslims observe the day through voluntary fasting, prayer, charity, and remembrance of Allah, seeking His mercy and forgiveness.

The word Ashura is derived from the Arabic word ‘Asharah’, meaning ten, and Muharram translates to “the honored.”

The 10th of Muharram in the year 61 AH (Hijri) marks the tragic event of Karbala, where the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) beloved grandson, Imam Hussain (RA), along with his family members and companions, were brutally martyred on the banks of the Euphrates River while standing for justice and truth.

Imam Hussain’s ultimate sacrifice for upholding the ideals of peace, justice, and human dignity is remembered as one of the most defining moments in Islamic history.

The tragedy of Karbala serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing against oppression and remaining steadfast on the path of truth.

Members of the Shia community observe the day with special rituals and mourning processions, among which the Tazia processions are particularly notable.

In a message on the occasion of Ashura, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, stated that the observance of Ashura will continue to inspire humanity to resist injustice and uphold truth and righteousness.

He paid deep respects to Imam Hussain (RA) and all those who were martyred in Karbala, calling upon all believers to engage in righteous deeds and strive for closeness to the Almighty on this sacred day.
