India unlocks Teesta barrage; low-lying areas flooded in Bangladesh

India has unlocked all 44 gates of the Gajoldoba due to incessant rains in the northern part of the Indian state of West Bengal.

The Teesta water was risen alarmingly due to the opening of the gates, increased rainfall, as well as upstream water flow. 

Currently, water is flowing at Dalia Point of Teesta Barrage over 60 cm above the danger level.

The low-lying areas of Dahgram in Patgram upazila, Gaddimari, Singamari, Sinduna, Patikapara, Dauabari in Hatibandha upazila and Bhotmari, Soilmari, Nohli, Char Boirati in Kaliganj upazilas of the district have been flooded, affecting some 10,000 families.

Mafizar Rahman, UP member of Char Sinduna union in Hatibandha upazila, said: “We did not experience any flash floods during the dry season and the river water had dried up in the past two months, but suddenly, the water level has risen, triggering flash floods," according to a UNB report.
