ActionAid Bangladesh, Oxfam in Bangladesh, Plan International Bangladesh, and Save the Children in Bangladesh have jointly expressed deep concern about the increasing incidents of sexual violence, harassment, and abuse targeting women, girls, and children.
In a strongly-worded statement, the organizations have called for swift action to ensure justice, protection, and the safeguarding of human rights for survivors of such violence.
The NGOs welcomed the government’s recent pledge to adopt a `zero tolerance` policy towards violence against women and children.
They also applauded the government’s commitment to ensuring that investigations into such incidents are completed within 15 days and that trials conclude within 90 days of the original incident.
While the NGOs acknowledged these positive steps, they called for immediate action to fulfill these promises and enforce the relevant policies without delay.
These calls for urgent action follow a series of nationwide protests, led by brave women, girls, and students, along with teachers, activists, and human rights organizations.
"We stand in solidarity with them," said the statement, showing support for those demanding change.
According to recent data from Ain o Salish Kendra, 294 women and children were victims of violence in just the first two months of this year, including 96 cases of rape, 44 of which involved children.
Alongside these disturbing figures, the organizations also pointed to a worrying rise in moral policing, mob violence, and the misuse of "gender justice" that is contributing to victim-blaming and discouraging survivors from seeking justice.
The NGOs highlighted the urgent need for a united stand against such violence, noting that these issues impact the communities they serve.
"We have come together to amplify their concerns and voices through this statement," they said, emphasizing the importance of ending harmful narratives that excuse or minimize gender-based violence.
The statement made it clear that any form of abuse or harassment against women, girls, and children is a serious violation of human rights.
The NGOs are calling for measures to ensure the safety and freedom of movement for women and children, as well as better protection in digital spaces.
They are also demanding the immediate prosecution and exemplary punishment of perpetrators, calling for swift, survivor-centered justice.
Additionally, the organizations are calling for legal reforms to close any gaps in current laws and provide stronger protection for survivors and their families.
In conclusion, these international NGOs are urging the Bangladesh government to act quickly and decisively to address the growing problem of sexual violence and harassment in the country.
They stress the need for comprehensive actions to protect women and children, ensure accountability for offenders, and create a safer environment for everyone.
