Interpol issues red alert to arrest Sheikh Hasina

A red alert has been issued through Interpol for the arrest of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The information was shared by Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul during a media briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Speaking to the press, Asif Nazrul said,

“A red alert has been issued through Interpol for the arrest of Sheikh Hasina.”

However, the interim government’s legal adviser did not specify when exactly the alert was issued.

This comes after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, following massive protests led by students and citizens.

Sheikh Hasina, who was the prime minister at the time, resigned and left the country, reportedly taking refuge in Delhi.

Since then, Sheikh Hasina has been facing several charges of genocide linked to the student-led protests, with multiple cases filed against her in the International Crimes Tribunal.

The tribunal has already issued an arrest warrant for her, and the interim government has formally requested India to send her back.

Despite this, no response has been received from India yet, and according to some Indian officials, there are no immediate plans to return her.

“If India does not return Sheikh Hasina, it will be a violation of the extradition treaty,” Asif Nazrul commented.

“Bangladesh will take this matter to the international level if needed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will handle the necessary steps in this regard.”

Sheikh Hasina’s continued stay in India and the unfolding legal actions have added another layer of complexity to the political landscape of Bangladesh, raising questions about the future of bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.
