Justice in motion: Former Awami League councilor arrested in Hakimpur student murders

Police have arrested Shamim Sardar, a 44-year-old leader of the Awami League and former city councilor, in connection with the murder of two students during a protest in Hakimpur, Dinajpur. 

He was taken into custody around 10 a.m. on Saturday while police were conducting a raid in the South Basudebpur neighborhood.

Shamim Sardar is the son of the late Abed Ali Sardar and serves as the joint general secretary of the Awami League‍‍`s Hakimpur branch. 

He has previously been a councilor for Ward 5. According to Sub-Inspector Arifur Rahman, who is investigating the case, Shamim will be brought to Dinajpur court today before being sent to jail.

The police report reveals that on August 5, during an anti-discrimination protest, two students—Asaduzzaman Noor, also known as Surya (17), and Muhtasim Naim (17)—were killed after a fire was set at the home of former mayor Jamil Hossain. 

Following the tragic incident, Asaduzzaman‍‍`s older brother, Md. Sujan, filed a murder complaint at Hakimpur police station on August 19. 

The case names 23 people as suspects, including former Member of Parliament Shibli Sadiq, former Upazila chairman Harun Ur Rashid, and Mayor Jamil Hossain. 

There are also around 90 to 100 unidentified individuals listed as unknown suspects.

Sub-Inspector Arifur Rahman stated that Shamim Sardar was arrested due to his involvement in the murder case. 

He mentioned that 17 suspects have been arrested in total so far related to this case.
