A group of demonstrators has been staging a sit-in outside the residence of BNP Chairperson’s adviser Fazlur Rahman, demanding his immediate arrest.
The protest began at midnight on Sunday in front of Concord Tower at Segunbagicha in Dhaka under the banner of Biplobi Chhatra Janata.
The agitation erupted following Rahman’s controversial remarks on a television talk show regarding the July uprising.
His comments sparked widespread criticism, prompting the BNP to serve him a show-cause notice. Shortly after, demonstrators gathered in front of his residence, chanting slogans and calling for his detention.
Around noon on Monday, about 14 to 15 protesters were seen occupying the street in front of the building, raising slogans against Rahman.
They accused him of repeatedly making derogatory comments about the July movement and demanded swift legal action.
The sit-in led to severe traffic congestion on the road in front of the Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters.
Police and army personnel were deployed at the scene. Following police requests, protesters later moved from the middle of the street to the side of the road around 12:45 pm, easing the traffic.
Army personnel eventually left, though a small number of police and security forces remained deployed to prevent untoward incidents.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam confirmed the protest, saying the authorities had persuaded the demonstrators to vacate the road and relocate to a safer spot.
Security officials of Concord Tower said Fazlur Rahman has been living in a rented flat in the building for nearly two decades. Since Sunday midnight, protesters have been stationed outside the premises continuing their demonstration.
