In a welcome announcement for government employees, Bangladesh will witness an extended holiday during this year’s Eid ul-Fitr celebrations.
The government has declared a five-day holiday, but due to the proximity of other significant dates, this holiday period will be much longer than usual, stretching across 11 days.
However, during this stretch, only two days will have office work.
The Ministry of Public Administration has set the Eid holiday from March 29 to April 2, with March 31 being the expected day for Eid, depending on the moon sighting.
This five-day break includes March 29, 30, 31, and April 1 and 2.
The first day of Eid will be a general holiday, while the two days before and after the Eid festival will be designated as government holidays under an executive order.
Before the official holiday begins, government employees will also have off on March 26 to celebrate Independence Day.
On March 28, a Friday, there will be a weekly holiday along with the observance of Shab-e-Qadr.
The day before the holidays, March 27 (Thursday), will be a working day.
Once the holiday period concludes, employees will return to work on April 3 (Thursday).
However, after that, the weekend holidays will immediately follow, on Friday and Saturday.
In total, from March 26 to April 5, offices will only remain open for two days—March 27 and April 3.
According to government holiday regulations, there are no provisions for casual leave between these holidays, so anyone wishing to extend their break will have to use earned leave.
This extended holiday period has left many looking forward to the long break, with fewer working days in a span of more than a week.
