Long traffic gridlock has been created on Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu bridge road on Saturday (July 17) as the eid holidaymakers continue rushing home.
Long queues of vehicles have left the commuters and transport staffs amid grave sufferings.
Elenga highway police in-charge Yasir Arafat said, vehicles were plying sporadically on the east highway since Friday (July 16) night leaving a severe congestion at 18 kilometers.
“Vehicular pressure has increased on road ahead of Eid-ul-Adha due to the relaxation of lockdown. As a result, a long traffic congestion of 18 kilometers have been created on the high way,” he said.
Highway and district police are working to reduce the gridlock, added he.
The jam left commuters waiting for hours on road. Besides, tailback also slowed down cattle transport.
Yasirs said, number of vehicles also increased due to Eid festivals. Besides, construction work is underway on the road’s Sirajganj part prompting the severe jam.
Apart from that, the bridge authorities suspended charging toll from Friday midnight that fueled more traffic to ply on roads, Yasir furthered.
