The High Court has upheld the death sentences of former police officers Pradeep Kumar Das and Liaqat Ali in the murder case of retired Major Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan.

The verdict was delivered on Monday, June 2. The original judgment, issued on January 31, 2022, by the Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court, sentenced the two to death and six others to life imprisonment.

Those sentenced to life include Sub-Inspector Nandadulal Rakshit, Constables Rubel Sharma and Sagar Dev of Teknaf Police Station, and civilians Nurul Amin, Mohammad Ayaz, and Mohammad Nizam Uddin from Marishbunia in Baharchhara.

The High Court bench comprising Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Md. Saghir Hossain fixed the date for the verdict after completing the hearing on May 29.

The hearing began on April 23 after submission of the paperbook. The state was represented by the Attorney General and his deputies, while the accused were represented by senior defense lawyers.

Major Sinha was shot dead by police at a checkpoint on Marine Drive in Teknaf on the night of July 31, 2020.
