Locals in Dhaka's Jatrabari area set a bus afire after a 35-year-old man died after being allegedly pushed off from the moving vehicle, by the helper of its driver on Saturday evening.
The deceased is Abdul Sayem Murad, a private company employee in the capital.
Inspector (Investigation) Sikder Mohitul Alam of Jatrabari Police Station said the incident took place around 6:00pm at Shaheed Faruk Sarak.
Even thoguh Murad was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with critical injuries, he was declared there at 7:00pm, said Ashraful Islam, a sub-inspector of the police station.
Enraged by the incident, locals set the bus on fire and beat up bus driver, Shah Alam, and helper Mohon and handed them over to police, he added.
Later on fire fighting units doused the fire around 6:30pm.
Injured bus helper Mohon, who is being treated at DMCH, claimed he had an argument with a passenger over bus fare and Murad was speaking in favour of the passenger, leading to a scuffle between them.
As the bus reached its destination, Murad hurriedly tried to get off the bus and was run over, he claimed.
