A mild earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck the southwestern region of the country early Tuesday morning.
The tremor occurred at 4:36am on Tuesday (February 3), according to Farzana Sultana, assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
A BMD press release said the epicentre was located in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira district, about 175 kilometres southwest of the capital, Dhaka. The quake originated at latitude 22.84 degrees north and longitude 89.01 degrees east.
The European-Mediterranean Seismology Centre (EMSC) and India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 150 kilometres beneath the surface.
Mild tremors were felt in Satkhira, Khulna, Jashore and nearby districts during the early hours, triggering panic among residents. However, no casualties or damage were reported immediately.
