Mob violence unacceptable, former CEC Habibul Awal not arrested: Home adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lt. General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that the mob justice carried out during the detention of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda is unacceptable.

He emphasized that if any member of the law enforcement agencies was involved in the incident despite being on the scene, an investigation will be conducted and legal action will be taken accordingly.

He also clarified that the reports of former Chief Election Commissioner Habibul Awal‍‍`s arrest are not accurate. He has not been arrested as of now.

The Home Affairs Adviser made these remarks while responding to questions from journalists on Monday morning, June 23, during a visit to the Horticulture Center in Mouchak, Gazipur.

He said, "The news regarding the arrest of former CEC Habibul Awal, which circulated yesterday, is not correct. He has not been arrested. However, former CEC Nurul Huda was detained from Uttara. The way mob justice was conducted during his detention is unacceptable. If any law enforcement personnel were involved in this while on duty, they will face investigation and legal action."

The adviser further mentioned that a new law is being formulated to protect agricultural land from illegal occupation.

He stressed the need to increase the production of local fruits alongside foreign varieties to prevent the disappearance of indigenous fruits.

During the visit, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arefin, Superintendent of Police Dr. Chowdhury Jaber Sadeq, Director of the Horticulture Center Enamul Haque, along with senior officials from the police and the Ministry of Agriculture, were present.

The Home Affairs Adviser toured different sections of the Horticulture Center, interacted with the officials and staff, and provided various directions and guidance.
