National election set for early April next year: Chief Adviser

Bangladesh will hold its next national election in the first half of April 2026, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced in a national address on Friday.

He stated that the Election Commission would soon release a detailed roadmap. “The government is working to create an environment conducive to free and fair elections,” he said, adding that the polls would occur between December 2025 and June 2026.

Dr. Yunus emphasized the caretaker government‍‍`s responsibility to ensure a peaceful, participatory, and credible election that avoids future national crises. He stressed the importance of institutional reform, warning that without good governance in election-related bodies, public sacrifices would be in vain.

The Chief Advisor noted that the interim government was formed under three mandates: reform, justice, and election. He expressed hope for visible progress on reform and justice—especially trials for crimes against humanity—by Eid-ul-Fitr.

Dr. Yunus said consultations had already been held with all stakeholders to ensure what he hopes will be the most competitive and transparent election in Bangladesh’s history. “We want an election that honors the martyrs of the July uprising, with record voter turnout and broad participation,” he added.

Highlighting the opportunity for a truly representative parliament after nearly a generation, he noted that many young people will vote for the first time.

He urged citizens to demand firm commitments from political parties and candidates—promises to uphold national sovereignty, avoid external influence, and approve agreed reforms in the first session of parliament. He also called for zero tolerance for corruption, political violence, and misuse of power.

“This election is not just a peaceful vote—it is the people’s path to a ‘New Bangladesh,’” Dr. Yunus said. While familiar parties and symbols will remain, he encouraged voters to choose based on commitment to real change.

Concluding, he called upcoming voters “fortunate,” reminding them of the historic importance of their vote. “Through your thoughtful choice, we can build a new political culture and fulfill the dreams of our martyrs,” he said.
