Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has emphasized that the national election should be held by December this year.
Reaffirming his consistent stance on the issue, he stated that only an elected government holds the legitimate authority to determine the country`s future course.
Speaking yesterday (Wednesday) during an Officers` Address at the Sena Prangon in Dhaka Cantonment, the Army Chief touched on various national matters.
The event was attended by officers from different levels of the army, both in person and virtually. Issues discussed included the upcoming election, humanitarian corridors, port management, reforms, and law and order.
Regarding the proposed humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, General Waker-Uz-Zaman noted that any decision on the matter must come from an elected government and follow legal procedures. National interest must be the top priority, and any steps taken should be based on political consensus.
The Army Chief delivered a stern message against mob violence, asserting that the army is adopting a stricter stance on law and order. He made it clear that disorder or violence in the name of mass gatherings will no longer be tolerated.
When asked about the ongoing debate over foreign management of the New Mooring Container Terminal at Chattogram Port, General Waker-Uz-Zaman said that local public opinion and the views of political leaders are essential, and such decisions should be made through a political government.
He stated that he has no knowledge of ongoing reform processes and has not been consulted or involved in any discussions regarding reforms.
With Eid-ul-Azha approaching, the Army Chief urged for efforts to ensure a safe and festive environment for all. He reaffirmed that the Bangladesh Army will never engage in any activity that compromises national sovereignty. He instructed all army personnel to remain neutral and to perform any election-related duties with honesty and dedication.
He thanked the troops for their performance under changing circumstances and confirmed continued support to the interim government.
