The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded a synchronized roadmap encompassing justice for the July massacre, political reform, and the upcoming national election, saying such a unified plan is essential to restore public and political trust.
At a press conference held on Saturday at the party’s central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, NCP Convener Nahid Islam made the announcement.
He also clarified that two student advisors—Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan—are not affiliated with the NCP.
Addressing the current political situation, Nahid Islam said the country is going through a period of uncertainty and instability. In this context, the recent resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus has sparked widespread discussion. According to him, Dr. Yunus took charge of the interim government in the aftermath of a public uprising. “Our (NCP’s) expectation from this government was and still is that it will move towards peaceful transfer of power through ensuring justice, reform, and voting rights for the people,” he said.
Raising a critical question, he added: “Is this merely an election-time government? Or does it also carry the responsibility of fulfilling the aspirations born out of a public uprising?” NCP believes that this interim government is a product of such an uprising, and therefore, it must not only oversee elections but also pursue justice for past atrocities—such as the July massacre—and implement fundamental reforms of the state.
“Our hope,” Nahid Islam continued, “is that Dr. Yunus will continue in his role and engage in meaningful dialogue with all political stakeholders to reach a constructive and inclusive resolution.”
He further stressed that the timeline mentioned in the July Declaration is fast approaching. Therefore, it is imperative to announce a consolidated roadmap—encompassing justice, reform, and elections—within the stipulated timeframe. Such a move, he said, would help build confidence among political parties and the public.
Calling on the government, he said: “We urge the authorities to publicly release a joint roadmap covering justice, reform, and the upcoming election, and to hold dialogue with all sides in search of a viable solution.”
He emphasized the importance of responsible conduct from all political parties and citizens alike, saying: “Considering the current national context, security concerns, and the future of democratic Bangladesh, we all must act responsibly. We (NCP) will uphold our responsibility and expect to reach a solution through peaceful dialogue.”
Other NCP leaders present at the press conference included Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Senior Joint Convener Samanta Sharmin, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and Chief Organizer (Southern Region) Hasnat Abdullah.
