Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the preparation of an action plan to prevent pollution in the rivers surrounding the capital Dhaka. He issued the instruction on Thursday at a meeting on protecting the water quality and environment of the Buriganga River.

After the meeting, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam shared the details. He said the prime minister has instructed officials to submit an action plan on the issue within one month.

The DSCC administrator said that instructions would be issued to ensure the installation of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) at every factory to prevent further increases in river pollution levels.

People and the environment will suffer if the rivers are not protected, he said.

Abdus Salam added that legal action would be taken against those who fail to comply with the directives.

He also said initiatives would be taken to make rivers across the country pollution-free, with the initial focus on Dhaka and its surrounding areas.
