Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed officials to build the Cox’s Bazar marine drive expansion without cutting trees, aiming to protect the environment.

Following his instruction, authorities are moving ahead with the four-lane road project while preserving around 3,000 trees along the route.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges is upgrading about 80 kilometres of road from Kalatoli to Sabrang Zero Point in Teknaf. As part of the project, a 32-kilometre stretch from Kalatoli to Patuartek is being widened to four lanes.

Officials said concerns were raised earlier after reports suggested thousands of trees might be cut. The prime minister then asked Road Transport Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam to review the plan and ensure no trees are felled.

After visiting the site, the minister said the road alignment has been slightly adjusted to protect the trees. He added that new trees will also be planted along both sides of the road to improve the environment and enhance the area’s appeal for tourists.

The project includes road widening, bridge construction and other infrastructure works, including a bridge over the Reju Canal. It is expected to be completed within this year.

Officials said the initiative reflects an effort to balance development with environmental protection and could set an example for future projects in the country.
