Police blocked a group from staging a silent sit-in protest under the banner "Santaner Pashe Obhibhabok" (Guardians Beside Children) outside Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The protesters had planned the demonstration at the DMCH`s main entrance to seek answers regarding the deaths of their children, who were killed during recent quota reform protests.
Shima Dutta, one of the guardians, expressed their desire to hold a peaceful sit-in to protest these deaths. “We asked the police for just 10 minutes to hold our sit-in, but they refused. We have the right to protest and the constitution guarantees it,” Dutta told the media.
Md Aktarul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Ramna zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, explained that the demonstration was not permitted because the group had not secured prior authorization from the DMP.
“We cannot allow the event to proceed without proper permission,” he added.
Following the police intervention, the protesters visited injured students at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
These students had been injured during clashes with law enforcement and pro-government groups during the quota reform movement.
