Postal dept to recover encroached properties, modernization plans announced

The government has prepared a list of encroached properties under the Postal Department, and steps will soon be taken to reclaim them through divisional commissioners and district administrators, said Foyez Ahmed Tayyab, the Principal Advisor and Special Assistant on Posts and Telecommunications.

He made the remarks on Thursday during the inauguration of World Post Day celebrations at the Postal Department auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Highlighting the issue of encroached land, Tayyab said, “Since taking office, we have prepared a comprehensive list of both the department’s total assets and encroached properties. Efforts to recover these properties will commence shortly under the coordination of divisional commissioners and district administrators.”

Tayyab also announced initiatives to modernize the postal system, including amending the Posts and Courier Act.

“Current address management structures are not suitable for a digital economy,” he explained. “We are leveraging private courier experience to digitize address management, integrating area codes, street codes, and house codes, alongside implementing geofencing for addresses. As the system involves personal data, we are updating the law to ensure privacy and expect to submit the amended Posts and Courier Act to the Cabinet by mid-November.”

Regarding parcel tracking, he said the department plans to improve its system to near 100% accuracy. “Currently, mail and parcel tracking covers 50–60% of items. We are upgrading the management software to ensure almost complete tracking.”

Tayyab further mentioned efforts to integrate the Postal Department with e-commerce platforms to provide uniform service across urban and rural areas and restore public confidence in online shopping.

Prior to the inauguration, postal officers and staff participated in a ceremonial procession outside the Agargaon Post Office. The parade included a team of postal riders with new e-bikes, symbolic runners carrying “Hurricane” and “Ballam” staffs, and other traditional symbols.

As part of the World Post Day festivities, a fair was held on the ground floor of the post office building, featuring 20 stalls displaying historical postal stamps and other essential postal equipment.
