At the end of 2022, the poverty rate in Bangladesh stood at 18.7 percent. 5.6 percent is extreme poor. The poverty rate is 14.7 percent in urban areas and 20.5 percent in rural areas. And 3.8 percent in extreme poor urban areas and 6.5 percent in rural areas.
This information has emerged through Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES). Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) conducted the survey.
According to BBS data, this rate of poverty was 24.3 percent in 2016, 31.5 percent in 2010, 40 percent in 2005, 48.9 percent in 2000, 47.53 percent in 1996, 47.52 percent in 1985, 55.56 percent in 1981, 70 percent in 1981 and 82 percent in 1973.
The average monthly income of a household is currently Tk 32,422. In 2016 this income was 15 thousand 988 taka and in 2010 it was 11 thousand 479 taka.
The average monthly expenditure increased to 31 thousand 500 taka in 2022. In 2016 it was 15 thousand 715 taka and in 2010 this expenditure was 11 thousand 200 taka.
