In a major demonstration on Thursday, February 6, members of the martyrs` families from the Anti-Discrimination Movement took over the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka, bringing traffic to a halt.
The protest, which began around 11:30 AM, saw the families demanding justice for their loved ones who were killed during the mass uprising in July-August 2024.
The grieving families, holding banners, placards, and pictures of their slain relatives, occupied the streets, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killings.
They are also fighting for their rightful demands to be acknowledged.
The protest has caused significant disruptions, with vehicles unable to move on both sides of the road leading from Science Lab to Shahbagh towards Matsya Bhaban, and from Kakrail to Shahbagh towards Dhaka University.
The congestion created a ripple effect, bringing the surrounding areas to a standstill as well.
One protester, speaking about the reason for the roadblock, said,
"We will not move until the killers are brought to justice and our demands are met."
The scene was filled with tension, as demonstrators stood their ground, while frustrated commuters were left stranded.
The authorities are yet to provide any statements on the situation or how long the blockade might last.
This protest highlights the growing unrest among the population over the lack of accountability for the deaths in last year’s uprising.
With emotions running high, the demonstrators remain firm in their stance, refusing to leave the area until their demands are addressed.
Traffic chaos continues to affect the city, leaving drivers and passengers stuck, while the protest at Shahbagh serves as a stark reminder of the unresolved issues stemming from the previous year’s events.
This powerful stand by the families of the martyrs is a clear signal to the government that they want answers, and they are not going away until justice is served.
