A railway employee has been detained for allegedly raping a female passenger inside the toilet of the Rangpur Express train while it was stationed at Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka on Wednesday morning.

The incident reportedly occurred between 8:45 AM and 9:15 AM, while the train was standing at the platform.

The suspect, identified as Saiful Islam (28), is a PA operator employed by Bangladesh Railway. His hometown is in Gaibandha, while the victim, a female passenger, is from Kurigram, according to police sources.

Farhat Ahmed, Superintendent of Syedpur Railway District Police, confirmed the incident to media, stating that the victim immediately informed the on-duty railway police onboard the train. Responding to her complaint, officers detained Saiful Islam on the spot.

Authorities have arranged to disembark both the victim and the accused at Santahar Junction Station in Bogra for initial procedures.

They will then be brought back to Dhaka, as the alleged crime occurred within the jurisdiction of Kamalapur. A formal case is expected to be filed at the Kamalapur Railway Police Station.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about passenger safety onboard trains and the vetting of railway personnel. Further investigations are underway.
