BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has strongly criticized the interim government for failing to control rising prices of essential goods and for not addressing widespread extortion. He made these remarks while distributing warm clothes in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka on Sunday.
Speaking at the event, organized by the Dhaka North City unit of Jatiyatabadi Krishak Dal in front of the Suchona Community Centre, Rizvi voiced his concern about the government`s inability to bring down the prices of everyday items, particularly food.
“It’s a fact that the government is unable to lower the prices of daily necessities, particularly food items. People will be disappointed if they do not experience relief compared to previous periods,” he said.
Rizvi also stated that the BNP has repeatedly called on the government to take action against syndicates and middlemen who are inflating prices, making life more difficult for ordinary people.
He further accused the government of failing to stop extortion, especially from trucks transporting goods, alleging that some law enforcement officials and criminals are involved in these illegal activities.
“The government may have good intentions, but its initiatives and administrative efforts to reduce commodity prices and curb extortion are inadequate. Proper administrative measures could have stopped extortion on the roads,” Rizvi said.
He emphasized that the government needs to take more responsibility for dealing with extortion and ensuring safety for all citizens. “Political parties cannot stop extortion but can control their own party members, which is what the BNP is doing.
But the government must take responsibility to put an end to extortion. It must ensure that every individual can move freely without fear and any threat,” he explained.
Rizvi also reminded the government that since it was formed through a revolution, it must live up to the expectations of the people. “If these expectations are not fulfilled, political parties will raise the concerns of the public,” he added.
The BNP leader further pointed out that while their party criticizes the government for failing to meet public needs, it doesn’t mean they are entirely against the government. “But that does not mean that we’re against them,” he clarified.
