As many as 7 thousand 809 people were killed in road accidents last year. Some 5 thousand 629 mishaps occurred in the year. Among the incident reported, at least 91 per cent took place on the road, rail and river.
The information was disclosed in a report published by Bangladesh Passengers Welfare Association. The report was unveiled during a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital on Sunday.
Though the highways closed for 85 days last year, the number of road mishaps increased by 2.5 per cent in comparison to the previous year. Of the total accidents, 32 per cent occurred in the highway while the local highways account for 39 per cent.
Among the road mishaps, 30 per cent was caused by truck, pickup, lorry and covered van.
The passenger welfare association published the report based on different media reports.
In 2020, as per the association’s report, 6,686 people were killed and 8,600 were injured in 4,891 road accidents.
The latest report also showed that in 2021, some 396 people were killed and 134 injured in 402 railways accidents while 311 were killed, 578 were injured and 544 went missing in 182 waterways accidents in the same year.
