At least four people have died after a trawler carrying 46 passengers sank in the Ichamati River in Louhajung upazila of Munshiganj on Saturday evening.
The identities of the dead and missing individuals have yet to be determined. Among the casualties are two women and two children.
No fewer than seven people were still missing as of 11pm.
Louhajung Fire Service Station Officer Qais Ahmed said the accident occurred around 8:30pm.
"So far, we have recovered the bodies of five people, and four of them have been sent to the local hospital. One body remains on the river bank," he said.
Local authorities arrived at the scene to assess the situation. A diving team from Dhaka is on its way to assist with the ongoing rescue efforts.
The cause of the trawler`s sinking is believed to be a collision with a bulkhead carrying sand.
Munshiganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance and Administration) Suman Deb mentioned that police are still unable to confirm the exact number of casualties and missing persons.
