A 55-year-old man died in police custody early on Tuesday hours after he was detained for interrogation in connection with a murder case in Tangail. However, police claimed the death to a case of suicide.
The deceased is Lebu Miah (55), son of Bahar Uddin of Banshtoil village in Mirzapur upazila.
Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud Karam, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station, said the suspect died by suicide in lock-up.
Lebu's wife Aleya Begum alleged that her husband was tortured to death in the police custody.
A woman named Sakhina Akhter, 40, was found dead at her home in Banshtoil village on Monday.
Her ex-husband Mofizur Rahman and Lebu Miah were soon after for questioning in this regard, and were kept in two separate rooms of the police station.
Lebu Miah' body was sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy on Tuesday morning.
The family members of the deceased and the locals started protesting the death of Lebu Miah by blocking the Gorai-Sakhipur road from 2pm, said witnesses.
Shariful Islam, additional superintendent of Tangail, said they would form a probe committee is underway to investigate the incident.
In a similar incident in August, a youth Sumon Sheikh, 25, has died in police custody at the Hatirjheel police station in Dhaka. Police claimed the youth committed suicide.
