Tensions have flared up once again at the Chouka border in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila, following a disagreement between citizens of both countries over tree cutting.
The incident, which took place on Saturday, involved clashes, stone-throwing, and back-and-forth chasing between people from both sides, with one Bangladeshi teenager injured in the process.
Locals reported that the issue started in the morning when a group of Indian nationals crossed into the no-man’s land on Bangladesh’s side and began cutting trees.
When Bangladeshis tried to stop them, an argument broke out between the two groups.
Soon after, both sides gathered near the border, leading to repeated rounds of chasing and stone-throwing.
During the altercation, a Bangladeshi teenager named Mohammad Asmaul was struck by a stone thrown by the Indian side.
In addition to stones, locals also accused the Indian side of using bricks and even setting off multiple explosions.
By midday, at least ten explosions were heard, further escalating the situation.
Lieutenant Colonel Golam Kibria, commander of the 59th Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion in Chapainawabganj, confirmed that additional BGB personnel were sent to the area after reports of the rising tension.
