Veteran politician and former minister Tofail Ahmed has died at the age of 82 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka.
Family sources said he passed away around 4 pm on Monday due to age-related health complications.
Tofail Ahmed was one of the most senior leaders of Tofail Ahmed and played an important role in Bangladesh’s political history, including the 1969 mass uprising and the country’s Liberation War of 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
He served as a Member of Parliament for multiple constituencies including Bhola-1, Bhola-2 and Bakerganj-1 from 1973 to 2024. Over his long political career, he held several key government positions, including Minister of Commerce and Minister of Industries.
He was also closely associated with Bangladesh Awami League and worked as a student leader during his early years. He served as vice-president of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union and later became a close political aide of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
After 1975, he spent several years in prison in different districts of the country during periods of political unrest. Despite this, he remained active in national politics for decades and was respected for his speeches in parliament.
His wife, Anwara Ahmed, died on November 20 last year. He is survived by his only daughter, Dr Taslima Ahmed Zaman Munni.
Tofail Ahmed’s long political career, spanning more than five decades, made him one of the most influential figures in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
