The issue of banning the activities of Bangladesh’s ruling party, the Awami League, was raised during a regular press briefing of the US State Department.
Responding to a related question, Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said, “We are aware that the interim government has suspended the activities of the Awami League until the conclusion of its trial in the special tribunal.”
He added, “We do not favor one political party over another in Bangladesh. We support a free and democratic process and call for transparent legal proceedings for all.”
Pigott also stated, “We urge Bangladesh, like all countries, to respect freedom of expression, the right to peaceful assembly, and freedom of association.”
A journalist followed up with a question regarding the interim government`s alleged role in promoting extremism.
In response, Pigott said, “We value our partnership with Bangladesh, which has developed over the past 50 years. We are committed to working with the interim government to deepen this partnership.”
Notably, the interim government in Bangladesh issued a gazette notification on Monday, suspending all activities of the Awami League until the International Crimes Tribunal completes its trials against the party and its leaders.
