World Press Freedom Day is being marked across Bangladesh and around the world today, highlighting the importance of free and independent media.

This year’s theme focuses on promoting press freedom to support human rights, development and global security.

The day, observed on May 3 each year, aims to review the state of press freedom worldwide and honour journalists who have lost their lives while doing their work.

According to UNESCO, the day was established by the United Nations in 1993 following earlier recommendations.

In Dhaka, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting organised a rally and a discussion programme to mark the occasion.

The rally started in the morning from the Officers’ Club and ended at the Tathya Bhaban complex.

Later, a discussion was held at the Department of Films and Publications, focusing on the role of media in ensuring transparency and accountability.

Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon attended the event as chief guest, while State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury joined as special guest.

Officials said the day serves as a reminder of the need to protect press freedom and support journalists in their work.
