Import and export activities at Burimari Land Port will remain suspended for four consecutive days from Tuesday due to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections in India.
The decision was confirmed by ASM Niaz Nahid, general secretary of the local C&F Agents Association, who said a directive was issued by authorities in India’s Cooch Behar district.
According to the notice, operations at Changrabandha on the Indian side and Burimari land port in Bangladesh will remain closed from April 21 to April 23 in line with the election schedule.
With the weekly holiday on Friday, the port will effectively remain shut for four days, with normal activities expected to resume on Saturday.
The association has already informed traders and relevant authorities about the temporary suspension of import-export operations.
Meanwhile, immigration officials said travel restrictions will also be in place during the period.
Sub-Inspector Saifur Rahman said Bangladeshi students in India will not be allowed to travel through the route, though medical patients and travellers heading to Bhutan and Nepal will be permitted.
Officials said the measures are part of coordinated steps taken on both sides of the border to ensure security during the election period.
